Name That Cat!
As a complete tangent to my usual ravings on this blog, I have an urgent identity crisis to solve. To whit, I have a kitten that needs naming in a hurry...
My girlfriend and I welcomed two kittens into our family today and, although they both came with names, I'm not 100% sure of the one belonging to "my" one, so I'm looking to my online bretheren for assistance.
Note: although, on hearing of this plan, my girlfriend (Amelia) promptly informed me that she didn't want "a bunch of f**king geeks" naming the cat, I did tell her a bunch of us might come up with a better solution than a single "f**king geek". Besides as I told her, not all of my friends are geeks :-)
Below are a couple of photos of the kitten in question. The ginger one is mine and is currently called Amy, which does suit her, although it's a little common for my liking. She doesn't respond to the name as yet, so I figure there's scope for some feline de-pol should an alternative moniker present itself.
For context, Amy's birthday is Feb 3rd, 2004 and she's very playful, loves a cuddle and purrs like a Ducati (i.e., loud and throaty). The other cat is called Coco/Rococo (belonging to Amelia) and we got both from the same place, so they're best of friends as you can see.
A further word of warning: I'm a huge fan of pop culture-related names, but Amelia has absolute veto rights and such names are generally pooh-poohed without a moment's thought.

Aphrodite. Clearly that's her name. I'm surprised you couldn't tell.

You could go for a matched set; Coke and Pepsi. :)

Congratulations! They're gorgeous. I thought marmalade cats were only ever boys? Is Rococco a boy or girl? Are its markings called 'calico'? Where did you get them from?
Anyway, re the name; consider sticking with family tradition which names cats with awful human names. (Remember Shirley and Rhonda?) Amy is too pretty a name. My suggestions: Bertha, Judith, Nancy or Vera (Neil's mum).
They should be lots of fun.

They are sweet and so relaxed together which is a blessing. My choice for Carmen/Placida/Tosca/Hermione/Josephine/Winona/Molly/Callista/Andrea Margot Marks. You will agree this is a good range of choices. One should be used, or else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sheesh! What can I say? I don't like cats. I like my pets to agree that they are pets - cats are way too smart for that. How about "your Highness" or "Madame" or even better (heehee) "the target". Now then, where's my old catapult. ;)

Well, I'm tempted to say one should be "Phnom" and the other one should be "Penh," but since you only get to name one, that might not fly. I'm actually quite surprised the ginger kitty hasn't already been named Willow! They are way cute...Anza and Lucy, their cohorts in California, send yowls and a can of tuna.

HI Andrew,
I am surprised that a lapsed Catholic such as yourself has not consulted Saints on Line for what saints’ day your Kitten was born
St Ansgar or St Blaise, I think the later is better sounding.

Alternatives could include other religious names such as Tara, or Maya, Laksmi, or if really adventurous Avalokiteshvara.
I recall my own cats long since depleted of their 9 lives who were called Taffy due to similar colours to your kitten, or Pushkin cuz I was learning Russian and the cat was a stray and rather pushy.
Yours

Oh so beautiful! as above, Avalokiteshvara sounds wonderful! You could call her Ava!
What gorgeous little boobas.

Well ...
Are you going to annouce the result?
I quite like the 'Pushkin' suggestion because Puss-ka (which I interpreted as Polish) lived next door to us in Newport.
What is the significance of April's 'Willow' suggestion. Doesn't she know that's a little dog's (who was a big sook at the vet today) name?

I'd like to give a hearty thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to me request for help with my kitten's name. Although I decided to stick with Amy's original name, out of respect, I have given her my two favourites as middle names.
Hence, Amy's full name is:
Amy Hermoine Pushkin Marks
(She seems very happy with it so far)
