Ohmigod - what have I done?!?

PICT0686.jpg

OK, in my defense:

  • It's deductable - and the end of the tax year cometh
  • IMac's do basically run *nix now
  • Although they say size isn't everything, the 20" monitor is sweeeeeet
  • Everything I do my development on (e.g., JDK, Eclipse, IntelliJ, Tomcat, etc) is all available for OS/X
  • I have a vision of an iPod somewhere in the near future

So although it might have been rash purchase on my behalf, I accept the inflated price and limited expansion options and are looking forward to experiencing life from the other side of the OS fence. So far, I've gotta say it's been a highly pleasurable experience:

  • Everything works straight out of the box
  • The packaging, doco and hardware itself exudes quality in the same way as a Bang and Olufsen showroom.
  • Not having a wheely mouse takes a little getting used to...
  • But even with all the other inherent weirdness of the OS/X interface, you never feel too far from home when you have a terminal window close by

The only major bummer so far is - no sign of a JDK 1.5 release anytime soon :-(

You pastel loving hippy. It's not Unix. It's a dress wearing, makeup slathered-on transvestite of a Unix system. Packages installed in /System/somewhere/deep/down/here/that/youll/never/find sheesh, give me a break.

Oh, ditch the 80's single button mouse and plug in a 3-button USB with scrolly wheel. They work out of the box.

The biggest weakness IMNSHO is the amount of desk real estate you lose to the thumping big blob. At least with a "tower" you get to put that on the floor.

OK Jon - I heard you the first time! Sheesh!

Does it help at all that it shipped with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 pre-installed?

Andy, you should have seen jon's reaction my iPod, I should post the abusive ICQ log. And it should be noted in jon's distant past that he used to program on a Mac... :)

Well Andrew,
I always suspected you played for both teams, and now it is confirmed... How can you choose that kinda of lifestyle Andy???

Its okay though, cuz we will support you thru this life changing period...

There is quite a theory around post fact justification of major changes

Attitude Change

1. Festinger's Theory of Cognitive Dissonance Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance argues that cognitive inconsistency creates a state of psychological tension that we are motivated to reduce. When we engage in counterattitudinal behavior we reduce the ensuing dissonance by changing our attitude to match our behavior.

Dissonance offers an explanation for a number of tendencies for actions to influence our attitudes, including change following counterattitudinal advocacy, spreading of alternatives and selective exposure after making choices, the tendency to justify the effort we expend to reach our goals, and reactions to information that disconfirms our beliefs.

Go the Mac. Don't listen to them Andy - if we could afford the luxury of a mac, we'd buy one too.

OS/X rocks.
